Here at Birchbox HQ, there’s nothing like a beautifully curated Instagram account to catch our attention – and the gorgeous geo-fleur feed has been providing our daily dose of green-fingered inspiration for month’s now! So, when we heard that they were launching their very own plant subscription service we had to find out more! Enter: the lovely Sophie Lee to fill us in on the world of plants, gardening inspiration, and the future of geo-fleur….
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU DO FOR A LIVING
I’m Sophie – and I’m the founder of geo-fleur. geo-fleur specialises in beautiful geometric homewares including; indoor terrariums filled with cacti and succulents, leather, brass and copper hanging planters, and ceramic vases that are perfect for keeping urban homes gorgeously green. We also specialise in workshops and bespoke work, so please get in touch if you have any ideas!
HOW DID YOU GET INTO PLANTS AND HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN GREEN-FINGERED?
My mum’s a florist (and a huge inspiration!) so from a young age I was always helping out with making buttonholes, big table decorations and bridal bouquets – which is super fun! My uncle is a head gardener of a big national trust garden and goes seed collecting in Japan – he always brings me back the most beautiful succulents to propagate so that’s how it started. My business partner, Sally, doesn’t really like flowers at all so when she got married I suggested that I plant her up a terrarium to carry down the isle. It all kind of took off from there – I made a few more and got addicted to Instagram (you can find us @geo_fleur).
ANY ADVICE FOR RELUCTANT GARDENERS (LIKE OURSELVES!)?
Don’t be scared of gardening – it’s so good! If you’re not that green fingered then I’d start off with a few cacti, or one of our monthly subscription plant boxes as it comes with full detailed instructions of how to keep your plant alive!
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR INCORPORATING GREENERY INTO SMALL SPACES?
This is one of the main reasons that I started geo-fleur – I live in a beautiful Cictorian flat but we have no garden. I started making concrete planters and leather plant hangers so that anyone could add a little greenery to their home – all you need is a picture hook to hang the plant hanger! I would also recommend a big house plant, like a monstera deliciosa – it’s one of my favourites as it’s so lush and green, and their leaves are just beautiful.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR A PLANT SUBSCRIPTION?
I LOVE subscription boxes. As a total beauty addict I’m obviously a HUGE fan of Birchbox – you should see my dressing table drawers, they’re packed with lovely samples and new products to try! I just thought, hang on, people like plants and they love a surprise in the post so why don’t I incorporate the two?! Subscriptions for February have now closed but sign up to the mailing list to be kept in the loop for March.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FOR GEO-FLEUR?
I love the Scandinavian lifestyle, and one of my best friends lives in Sweden, so I try and go out and see her at least every season to be inspired by the beautiful design and spaces there. I’m also a HUGE fan of Pinterest and my slight addiction to Instagram definitely helps – I follow a lot of Japanese Garden bloggers who have the most beautiful style.
WHAT MAKES THE PERFECT TERRARIUM?
I’m a slight perfectionist so I think it helps to have a beautiful geometric terrarium – we’ve just launched this collaboration with a glass artist in Brighton so we stock this exclusive iridescent teardrop terrarium at our online shop. Next, you need to source some beautiful cacti – I’d recommend using three different shapes and textures, cacti soil (which is available at most big garden centres), and some aquatic gravel to decorate. Finally, and most importantly, to make it last your terrarium needs some good light and to be sprayed once a week with this beautiful brass mister.
FINALLY, WHAT’S NEXT FOR GEO-FLEUR?
Excitingly, we’re in the process of writing a book which I am SO excited about. Also, we’re going to be launching some European workshops, in Amsterdam and some other locations TBC – I’m so excited as I love travelling!
