Is there any hotter trend this Autumn than a luscious wine-stained lip? We are so enamoured with the new season’s dark make up collections, that we just had to think of a way of putting them to good use. This lip is a great way of doing so: dark, mysterious and incredibly seductive, it is the lip to try for a romantic night out. Here are our top tips on how to mix this trend into a stunning look…
You will need…
Lipstick: look out for a maroon, plum or deep red with hints of purple or raspberry, such as Youngblood Lipstick in Bistro, £13.50 (3)
A lip liner: we recommend MAC Cremestick Liner in Portside, £11.50 (1)
A clear lipgloss like MAC Clear Lipglass, £11.50 (optional)
Black mascara: try Jane Iredale Longest Lash Thickening & Lengthening Mascara in Black Ice, £26.00 (4)
A black pencil eyeliner like Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil in Onyx, £16.00
Pink blush: our pick is Bobbi Brown Blush in Tawny, £17.00 (2)
Step 1: face. For this look, simply aim for a clear complexion with a matte finish, which is the best canvas for the darker colours you will be using.
Step 3: eyes. Nothing works better with a juicy dark lip than a simple eye, as this keeps the focus on the lip itself. Define your eyes slightly with lengthening mascara, aiming for trendy spider lashes for more impact. If you want a dramatic evening look, black eye pencil is a great option: apply it on your upper and lower lids, and keep it soft by smudging it out slightly.
Step 4: blush. Add a rosy touch to your cheeks for a flushed, healthy-looking complexion that works wonderfully with wine-stained lips. Stay natural and do not select a colour that is either too bright or too light. If you want a more defined look, use your blush to sculpt your cheeks very lightly.
Step 5: lips. A rich lip is the essential characteristic for this look, so find a colour that matches your skin tone. Apply your lipstick and lightly dab it with a tissue: this will provide an uneven and less harsh effect. For a more precise finish, line your lips with a lip liner in a similar shade. If you are using a matte lipstick
and prefer a lush look, finish off with a layer of translucent gloss to get an irresistibly slick finish.
