By the time May rolls around, we’re ready for a beauty overhaul. Not only are we craving change after a long winter but the (hopefully) warmer temperatures also mean our winter essentials may not be the best choices. Here are our top tips for transitioning your skincare, hair and make-up out of winter and into summer…
Skin: Lighten Up
It’s time to tweak your routine to fit your changing skin. In warmer weather you might be perspiring more, so make sure to cleanse both morning and night with a gentle wash and following with a toner to tighten and hydrate skin. To brighten skin, try a chemical exfoliator, which is perfect for in-between weather because it effectively dissolves dead skin cells without irritation. One of our favourites is Caudalie’s Glycolic Peel. You can ease up on the ultra-rich creams and use a light face oil by itself or in combination with a moisturiser. Top tip: look out for products that are high in antioxidants to help protect skin from sun damage and prevent wrinkles.
Make-Up: Glowy, Not Shiny
Warmer weather means our skin produces more oil, so it’s extra important to use primer for your face and eyes. Try Benefit’s the POREfessional: Matte Rescue Invisible-Finish Mattifying Gel for your face and Stay Don’t Stray for your eyes. Lighten up your foundation, especially if you’ve been using a more moisturising formula, by switching to a tinted moisturiser or BB Cream like this one from Marcelle. A dusting of powder or blotting papers can also be used to touch up throughout the day and to help mattify skin.
Summer is a great time to experiment with colour, too! A wearable trend like coral is a great place to start. Try a sheer wash like Benefit’s Punch Pop Liquid Lip Color in Mango or opt for Benefit’s They’re Real! Double the Lip in Coral Confessions if you’re feeling daring. Paired with a coral blush on the cheeks, this works a a gorgeous monochromatic look. The eyes are all about violets so try Eyeko Me & My Shadow in Taupe across the entire lid for a subtle nod to the trend. Add a cat eyeliner flick for a more dramatic finish.
Hair: Frizz-Free, Care-Free
While our hair is never a fan of chilly weather, warmer temperatures bring their own problems — specifically humidity and UV damage from frequent sun exposure. To keep hair manageable and sleek, try a primer – like the Bumble and bumble. Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer – to detangle, de-frizz and protect hair from the sun. If you’re dealing with humidity-induced puffiness, try an anti-humidity hairspray like amika The Shield Style Extending Spray. Curly-haired girls face more intense humidity battles, so try cocktailing, or combining more than one product throughout your hair, to achieve perfect waves or curls. Start by rinsing hair with cool water in the shower. Don’t scrub your curls with a drying towel, as this can aggravate your cuticle and make hair even frizzier. Next use one product for moisture, like PARLOR by Jeff Chastain Touchable Curl Cream, and a light serum like Luseta Beauty Coconut Oil Hair Repair Serum.
Summer is also the perfect time to try out new styles, particularly braids. Why not try incorporating a fishtail braid near the front of your hair, then pulling back into a ponytail for a chic, care-free hair day.
