Timeless Beauty: Trends That Have Stood The Test Of Time

The boho, festival vibes of the 70s, bigger than big hair of the 80s and ultra sleek, grunge trends of the 90s may seem a whole lifetime ago, but a closer inspection of our Instagram feed reveals there are elements of these decades we never truly left behind. It’s fair to say we had our fair share of beauty wins as well as, what can only be described as beauty faux pas in decades gone by, but this month we’re embracing a more timeless take on the 70s, 80s and 90s, adding a modern twist to our favourite looks from the past!

THE 70s

When it comes to all things 70s, the likes of boho braids, flower crowns and muted colour palettes instantly spring to mind, conjuring up images of soft and pretty styles that are universally flattering across all skin tones. A rosy flush to the cheeks and the addition of a hair accessory or two to mask a multitude of hair sins were the ultimate 70s style companions, both of which can easily be added back into your everyday routine to achieve a bohemian vibe, with a modern twist.

Swapping a head scarf for a beret or fedora are the simplest of changes to modernise the 70s style we love so dearly, maintaining the sophistication of the era but with a modern twist. Whilst back then an arched brow and glossy lip were favoured, switching to a matte lip shade and rocking a fuller, more natural brow instead instantly bring this look into the 21st century.

Benefit’s Precisely, My Brow Pencil is a make-up bag essential for creating the illusion of thicker, natural brows, thanks to its ultra fine tip that helps mimic the look of real brow hairs and keeps them in place for 12 hours straight. Keep your eyes bold and lashes big to maintain a true 70s Twiggy style, but remember to switch up your lip to a matte shade (we love the MAKE Matte Lipstick in the shade Tulipa) and voila, you’re good to go!

THE 80s

Whilst styles of the 80s may seem a world away from the look you’re channeling now, the ‘bigger the better’ hairstyles and playful pops of colour may in fact be more timeless than they first appear. Volumised and bouncy locks are a look that never goes out of style so whether you’re a fan of the corkscrew curl or a more textured, bedhead look, a hair product that provides instant lift and definition is a must-have in your routine.

The Bumble and bumble. Thickening Dryspun Finish spray creates an airy texture and fullness at first spritz, helping to achieve the drama of an 80s ‘do, without weighing hair down. Next up, a bold lip. This timeless beauty best friend is a saviour on days when we need an extra something to brighten our look; achieving 80s status in a modern way has never been easier. The Doucce Click Click Lipstick in Pink Essence succeeds in delivering the boldness of the 80s, but with a 2018 twist!

THE 90s

Whilst over plucked eyebrows might be an aspect of 90s style we’re more than happy to leave behind, there’s plenty of make-up trends from the Spice Girls and Clueless era that sit perfectly alongside our everyday look.

First things first, swap out a micro thin brow for a fuller yet defined shape (or fake it ‘till you make it with the Laura Mercier Sketch & Intensify Pomade and Powder Brow Duo) and instantly achieve a more modern take on a 90s classic style. To retain the timeless nature of the 90s, opt for a deep berry lip (a favourite for girls cocktail nights and special occasions galore) and a smokey kohl liner to really add some drama to your look- we love the Jane Iredale PureMoist Lipstick in Margi or Lord & Berry Couture Kohl Kajal Eye Pencil in black for a perfectly vampy look. Keep your complexion dewy and add some lightweight volume with the Oribe Dry Texturising Spray to retain a modern feel, and hey presto- you’re 90s ready in a flash!
