A major makeover might not be on the cards – or budget – this month, but there are still some tiny tweaks you can do to mix things up. Natalie Silverton, Contributing Beauty Editor checked out five celebrity Instagrams for inspiration.
WEARABLE WET HAIR
On the cover of her first solo album, Louder, Lea Michele’s normally pristine polished hair has been given a beachy makeover. Hair pro Mark Townsend created her wet bed head, which is a major trend for Spring 2014.
Get the look: Before rough-drying, rub palms together with a bit of pomade, gel or high shine serum, like Electric Hair’s Electric Serum, and run through strands to add a dewy texture. But take the ‘less is more’ approach – too much and your hair will look greasy.
GROW YOUR BROWS OUT
In addition to her bombshell waves, we’re also loving Sofia Vergara’s bold mega brows in this recent Instagram.
Get the look: The best way to enhance yours is to fill in sparse brows with a matte powder that is closest to your hair colour – Benefit’s Brow Zings comes in Light and Deep and comes with a fine angled brush – brush up and out in short quick strokes to create the most natural effect. Comb them into place or use a clear setting gel to keep any stray hairs at bay. If you’ve over-plucked your brows, try ModelCo’s Lash & Brow Growth Stimulator for a month and see the results before your, ahem, eyes.
OPT FOR A SIDE SWEEP
Tired of the same old parting? Changing it to a side sweep with mermaid waves like Molly Simms here can really make a huge statement with minimal effort.
Get the look: If you normally part your hair to the middle or the opposite side, make like Molly and prep your just washed strands with a volumising mousse and hydrating oil like KMS California Curl Up Wave Foam and Eva Cosmetics Mystic Diamond to give it bounce and shine, before blowdrying. For voluminious waves use hot rollers or for big curls use a large barrel curling tong through your hair. To find where to place your parting, use your eyebrow arch as your guide. Use the tail end of a comb to section your strands right above the highest point of your brow. Then tuck one side behind the ear and sweep the rest of the curls over one shoulder and spray lightly with hairspray to hold in place.
SWAP LIPSTICK FOR LIP STAIN
Bold red lips like Taylor’s are big news, but rather than commit to red lipstick, why not try a lip stain – like Mirenesse Lip Bomb – which is a more modern way to wear lip colour. The new formulas are creamy, sheerer than lipstick, conditioning, long-lasting and don’t end up slipping off like a gloss.
Get the look: Everyone can wear red, it’s just a case of finding the right red for you. Remember the red you choose needs to match the colour of your skin once your foundation is on. Warm orange-toned reds work better with olive or yellow-toned skin, while dark Bordeaux looks incredible on dark skin. A cool-toned red with pinkish or blue-ish tones look most natural on a fairer skin but will also pop out on an olive or darker skin. Another side effect of blue-toned reds: it makes your teeth look whiter! Get the shape right and be a bit more precise than Taylor when applying – see what happens when you use a phone camera as a mirror!
HAVE A MAKE-UP FREE DAY
We’re used to seeing her glamorous and red carpet-ready, but here’s Cameron Diaz looking fresh faced without make-up, whilst celebrating the launch of her new book, The Body Book – showing us that you can look barefaced and beautiful.
Get the look: To be brave enough to show the world your true face and give yourself a make-up free day, it’s important to have a great skincare routine in place so your skin always looks radiant and healthy. And what better time of year to start? We love skin expert Caroline Hirons’ no-nonsense approach to a good skincare routine. Check out her cheat sheet here!
