5 Things To Do: June 2017

JUNE

NEW ON NETFLIX

If you’ve already binged the new seasons of House Of Cards and Master of None, you’ll be looking for something new to watch on Netflix. First up, we suggest a new comedy about women’s wrestling in the ’80s, GLOW, arriving June 23rd. It stars Community‘s Alison Brie, Marc Maron (of podcast fame) and Brit singer Kate Nash, and comes from some awesome women involved with Orange Is The New Black and Nurse Jackie. Expect a lot of amazing outfits, some good laughs, plus some awesome and ouch-worthy wrestling moves. Speaking of OINTB – that’s already back this month with a new series! Plus, the brilliant Naomi Watts stars as a therapist who gets too close to her patients in brand new show Gypsy (arriving June 30th), with Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) directing the first couple of episodes. Don’t have Netflix? Guilty pleasure Love Island should keep you addicted all summer long…

FEEL THE MUSIC

Festival season starts in earnest this month – but if you haven’t got tickets, there are still ways for you to enjoy the season (and still sleep comfy in your own bed every night). The BBC will livestream most of Glastonbury (21st – 25th June), including headliners Radiohead, Foo Fighters and Ed Sheeran. And while you’re on iPlayer, you can check out or rewatch the amazing #OneLoveManchester, where Ariana Grande brought together Take That, Liam Gallagher, Coldplay, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Pharrell Williams, Robbie Williams and more to show solidarity and togetherness after the terror attack that followed Ariana’s recent Manchester concert.

TAKE A DAY TRIP

The beauty of living in the UK is that we live on a small island – and most of us have the sea, forests, cities, open countryside and more within driving distance (or a short train ride!). So, this month our theme is Daytripping, all about discovering the highlights of the towns, cities and countryside that are not too far away from all of us. Whether you want a museum-packed day in the city, some tranquility in the middle of the countryside, or a sunny beach day out, stay tuned to the blog as we’ll get some of our friends to share the highlights of where they live and find some of the best high street boutiques via our friends at Trouva (see inside your Birchbag this month for an exclusive offer from them too!).

SETTLE FOR THE CINEMA

Even if you’re a little sick of all the superhero movies out there, you should try Wonder Woman. Starring Gal Gadot, Robyn Wright, Chris Pine and Lucy Davis, it’s been uber-successful already, is directed by Monster‘s Patty Jenkins, and we think it’s a massive breath of fresh air compared to the usual testosterone-fuelled fights. If you’re looking for something more indie, The Big Sick is worth your time – it stars Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan in a comedy-drama based on the true story of how Kumail and his now-wife Emily met… just before she fell into a coma.
