In between busy jobs, looking after kids, and keeping up with friends and family, it’s easy for life to feel a little overwhelming. For us, when we’re feeling a little blue, the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life is to indulge in a cosy night in to recharge our spirits. Need some inspiration of your own? Here’s what we’ll be listening to, watching, and even eating to feel good all month long…
THE GOOD PLACE
Landing on Netflix at the end of September, this series follows recently deceased Eleanor Shellstrop (stay with us…) who wakes up in the afterlife to find she’s been welcomed to “The Good Place”. As the name suggests, it’s a utopian-style paradise where only those who have lived a truly righteous life on Earth reside. However, Eleanor quickly realises that there’s been a mix-up and the series follows her attempts to cover-up her mistaken identity. Starring Kristen Bell, Ted Danson, Jameela Jamil, and more, it’s a light-hearted comedy with (we’ve been told) a twist ending.
THE CRYSTAL MAZE
There’s something comforting about curling up in front of the telly for a healthy dose of nostalgia – and that’s just what the return of The Crystal Maze provides. It follows the same format as the original 80s series that we all know and love – 5 contestants work through a series of challenges in themed zones (Aztec, Medieval, Future, and Industrial FYI) before entering the crystal dome. However, with the hilarious Richard Ayoade as host this latest re-boot has reached cult Friday night viewing status. Watch this clip of a man getting stuck on some planets during a challenge for a taste of what’s in store – then catch up with the rest on All 4.
HAIM & POP PLAYLISTS
We defy you to give this record a listen and not feel uplifted! An innovative blend of guitar rock, electro pop, and 80s soul, Haim’s second album has us dreaming of American road trips and hazy teenage summers. The lead single Want You Back is feel-good pop at its best and brightens even the most dreary of afternoons. Failing that, have a browse on Spotify where you’ll find a whole host of motivating, chill-out, and cheesy pop playlists waiting for you.
The directorial debut of Hallie Meyers-Shyer (the daughter of rom-com powerhouse writers and directors Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer), Home Again is at UK cinemas now if you fancy taking your night in off-site. Starring Reese Witherspoon as Alice Kinney, the film kicks off on Alice’s 40th birthday. Recently separated from her husband, she decides to move back to Los Angeles with her daughters and ends up offering three young filmmakers a place to stay. The film follows her budding romance and reincarnation as an independent woman – with, of course, some complications along the way.
While food isn’t, strictly speaking, entertainment – it’s a guaranteed mood-booster for most of us at Birchbox HQ! Our latest food love? Poke! You’ll often find us at Island Poke when we need a lunch that’s guaranteed to bring a smile to our face, but these bowls are easy (and fun!) to make at home too. A Hawaiian seafood dish; it’s a fresh and filling bowl of marinated fish, sushi rice, and tasty toppings like avocado, pickled ginger, and crispy onions. Check out this poke how-to to make your own.
