5 Great Outdoor Workouts To Try

The weather is stunning right now, so we’re totally eager to take advantage of every moment we get to spend in the sunshine. Going inside to a window-less, sweaty gym in the summer feels wrong – so stay outdoors! Here are 5 of our favourite ways you can work out in the great outdoors:

BRITISH MILITARY FITNESS:

WHO’S IT FOR? Those serious about getting fit this year – good weather or not!

WHAT IS IT? These hour-long workouts offer fun group training, suitable for a variety of fitness levels from novice to triathlete. The regime was started by Major Robin Cope, who wanted to create a “fun and effective form of training using the highly professional skills learnt in the military to get people fit”. 15 years later, new locations are being added all the time – find your your nearest class here.

ROOFTOP YOGA:

WHO’S IT FOR? Those bored of staring at a painted breeze block wall whilst gazing through their legs in downward dog pose.

WHAT IS IT? Last summer, rooftop fitness classes made the most of the mild weather and this trend looks set to continue through the rumoured heatwave of 2014 (fingers crossed!). This is a craze that was started across the pond and has now become a big hit in London. There are several locations you can try this, though most are in larger cities – like Peckham in London, with LucyYoga.

GORILLA CIRCUS:

WHO’S IT FOR? Bored but adventurous types looking for other fitness options.

WHAT IS IT? If running around a field or riding a bike bores you, perhaps you’re more suited to circus training in the park? Gorilla Circus offer classes across London in trapeze and tight rope walking – as long as the weather’s fine. There are classes for children and adults, so even if you’ve never set foot in a circus, there will be experts on hand to guide you through every stage. It’ll be just like that that episode of Sex and the City where Carrie soared through the air with the New York skyline in the background!

OUTDOOR SWIMMING:

WHO’S IT FOR? Swimmers who want to push themselves and get back to nature.

WHAT IS IT? Outdoor swimming is growing in popularity as a chemical-free alternative to chlorine-filled leisure centres. The Outdoor Swimming Society claim, “when you are swimming outdoors, your sensorium is transformed. You see the world in All-New Glorious Full-Body Technicolour!” Check out this map for your nearest outdoor swimming location.

BUGGY BOOTCAMP:

WHO’S IT FOR? Mums who want to work out, but never get the chance to leave the house without their kid(s).

WHAT IS IT? This workout promises to reinvigorate all areas of fitness – muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility. It’s a great way to meet other mums whilst enjoying the great outdoors – or indoors if it’s raining! – and you can take your little one. Find your local buggy bootcamp here.
